Science at the Federation
At the Federation, we are enthusiastic in our approach to teaching Science and each year group endeavours to link their science lessons as closely to the topic as possible.
Children are given the opportunity to develop their enquiry skills and scientific knowledge through hands-on activities and practical experiences. Each half term, children take part in a 'Teacher Assessment in Primary Science' (TAPS) activity to engage in a range of enquiry types whilst simultaneously enabling teachers to assess pupils' scientific enquiry skills.
Children are encouraged to apply their learning to real-life contexts and to understand the importance and significance of science in everyday life.
In 2021, children and staff came together to create a shared 'vision and principles' for science. These visions and principles are central to the Science teaching at the Federation and are displayed all around school as a reminder of this. The quote on the bottom of the poster, written by a Year 6 pupil at the time, reflects the importance Science plays both in school and in the wider world.
In 2022, both schools in the Federation were awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM). Since then, staff continue to work on maintaining the profile of science and ensuring that our teaching and learning is celebrated.
The annual Science Event is a reflection of how we value science within our community and the broad diversity that it represents. As part of British Science week, the Federation invites a host of local STEM volunteers to put on an evening of enrichment activities and expose our children to a range of STEM careers.
Throughout the year and across the Federation we collaborate with a variety of partners on school projects; this is something that the children enjoy enormously.
