Dear Year One

We hope you all had an enjoyable Easter holiday. We are now going to set work on a weekly basis to help keep up with our learning. The most important thing you can be doing is reading regularly, 5 nights a week, for about 5 to 10 minutes. Don’t forget to write this up in your reading record books, thank you.

It would be good if you could exercise, Joe Wicks (You Tube) or look on the CBeebies website where there are a choice of different presenters.

Do as much as you can, but enjoy your learning. Don’t forget, there are lots of fun activities to do on Education City too!

Phonics

We have reach the point in the year were we would be recapping previous sounds. Here are a few fun ideas that would support this at home. We will include the sounds we have learnt – these can also be found in your child’s purple folder.  

  1. Make your own set of Flashcards: these sound show each sound clearly and a picture of something to represent the sound for example t for teddy.
  2. Use post it notes to stick our sounds around the house and go on a sound hunt – eg go and find ow and ou.
  3. Stick sounds that your child is struggling with on cupboard doors or doors around the house. Use them as a password, meaning they cannot enter the room without reading it.
  4. Challenge – Play snap with sound cards. Try and find all the pairs or groups of spellings that make the same sound eg. Ou and ow, oa
  5. and ow, ee and ea and e-e, ay and ai, and a-e etc.

English

We will be using the Writing Talk Home school booklet from Talk for Writing. This week it about Sidney Spider, A tale of friendship. You do not need to print out all of the pages, you can read online and answer the questions on your own paper. You could copy the ideas from the booklet.  Do as much as you would like, remember this is over 5 days not all at once.

Other activities we would do at school that you might also enjoy:

  1. Making actions to help remember the story – including full stops and capital letters
  2. Create a story map
  3. Create puppets to act out the story

We have also included a common exception word mat for you to complete, there will be a different one each week!

Maths

Activity 1:

We had just started to look a length, using our hand spans to measure different objects. Look around your home and see if you can measure the length of a table, your bed and 3 other objects and write these down in a table. Then measure them using a ruler.

A handspan is the distance of your hand stretched out from your thumb to your little finger.

Activity 2:

Find 5 or 6 different objects in your home and put them in order from longest to shortest. Then estimate how long you think they are, then measure them with a ruler.

Activity 3:

Try counting in 2’s as you go up your stairs and 10’s as you come down. Or walk around your garden or your bedroom counting in 2’s, 5’s or 10’s.

Use an analogue clock, one with a round face and count in 5’s. This is useful as it helps learn time and your 5 times tables: 1 x 5 = 5. If you are confident with 2, 5 and 10’s then start with 4 and 8.

Science

Finally we should be observing the difference between the seasons. You could make a season picture using colouring pencils, pictures from old magazines or objects in your garden. Use a piece of paper and fold it into 4 quarters and label each section using the 4 different seasons: Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer. You can use your own ideas of how to present each season or copy from below – use the outline of a tree, the ground and add what you would see for each season e.g. flowers growing.

After you have drawn your picture for each season write a few sentences about them. Think about what the weather might be like and things we might do and celebrate within these seasons.
